Menorca, the most easterly island of the Balearics, offers us multiple posssibilities of exploring her beauty.
The Island
Menorca is a wonderful island, in which the drystone walls draw an imaginative picture throughout the flat countryside, scattered by small hills. The natural vegetation is mixed with the regular lines of the cultivated fields and the white country houses. The woods embrace the ravines which in their turn melt into the sea. The menorquin coast contains two different physical and geological areas, the north rocky and dry, beaten by the powerful "Tramontana" wind and the south or "Migjorn" of the coast smoother and protected.
The action of a temperate climate like the mediterranean, a moderate rainfall, the influence of the sea and the human activity have forged a great variety of scenery in a relatively small area.
From times long remote the island has sustained different populations of which today we still can see important remains. Amongst these, the Pre and Talaiotic civilizations, also the Phoenician, Cartaginese, Roman, Arab, Mallorquin, Aragonese and Castillian and finally French and English.
The declaration of Menorca as a Biosphere Reserve has given recognition to the manner of interworking man/environment on the island. Nowadays we want to extend this committment to all who want to visit and share the island with us.
¡Fiesta!
Menorca is a tranquil island -a paradise- but this doesn't mean that we cannot find spaces for enjoyment. The port of Mahon as well as the port of Ciutadella offer multiple possibilities to take a coffee, a few drinks on the maritime terraces, listen to live music or to dance non stop till dawn.
It's also possible to live and experience the "fiestas" of each one of the villages of the island, beginning with "Sant Joan" in Ciutadella and finishing with "La Mare de deu de Gracia" in Mahon. Horses, commotion, music, "pomada" ( traditional drink of gin and lemon ) and a lot of entertainment in the streets!!
